There is something wrong with me ...
Rant somewhat inspired by [info]junior37's stance on dating guys who have U2 as their favorite band ...

You know how you can spool the toilet paper from the top or from the bottom? I'm firmly a top-down guy. I find spooling TP bottom-up unnatural and wrong. And I started thinking, "What if I married a bottom-up girl?" I can see it now - one of us would change the toilet paper using our preferred style. The other would endure it for a little bit, then switch it. It would be passive-aggressive for a while, neither of us discussing it but always finding that the toilet paper had been oriented based on the last bathroom user. Finally, it would blow up into a heated discussion, with both of us espousing the logical merits of our view (though God only knows what kind of possible logic there is to the bottom-up mentality [though I have heard it makes logical sense if one has cats, which is a totally separate kind of moral and intellectual deficiency]), but to no resolution. Or maybe there would be a resolution, with the loser forever being resentful of the way the toilet paper would be spooled. It could only lead to brooding mutual resentment and contempt, ultimately resulting in the dissolution of the relationship.

I literally can't see it working out between me and someone who was in favor of the bottom-up style of toilet paper spooling. So should this be a first-date question for me now? I mean, there's no future if we're incompatible on this front.

Needless to say, this doesn't make me super-optimistic about my potential as a caring, reasonable, loving husband who has a wife he cherishes and respects as an equal.

    The Flaming Lips ...
    ... have recorded

    1) My favorite song about menstruation ever designed to be played on four CD players simultaneously (A Machine in India, from Zaireeka)
    2) My favorite concept album ever about a Japanese girl fighting robots from outer space (Yoshimi Battes the Pink Robots, obviously)

    Introducing the Steak Quest
I'm not one for New Year's resolutions. Life does not begin or end on January 1st; it's a process where we must all strive our best every day. But sometimes the stars align and it just so happens that the symbolic rebirth of the calendar year falls neatly in line with the challenges of our mortal struggle. Either that or I had this idea four months ago but I was too lazy to send the email out until now.

At any rate, here is the mission: to find the perfect steak. Over the next 12 months, we will travel to 12 of the finest steakhouses in the Boston area (many of which are expensive and / or suggest nice attire). The quest begins at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse: http://www.ruthschris.com/

If I end up dead in a pool of my own vomit this weekend ...
"Well my ship's been split to splinters and it's sinking fast
I'm drownin' in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I've got nothin' but affection for all those who've sailed with me" - Bob Dylan, Mississippi

Zach Braff, eat your heart out.
One of my friends sent an email paraphrasing the "listen to this; it'll change your life" scene from Garden State, which prompted this email in reply.

Songs which have changed my life:
    1) "The End" by The Doors - hearing this in the intro to Apocalypse Now inspired me to buy my first CD - The Doors' self-titled album.
    2) "Night Moves" by Bob Seger - inspired me to learn to play guitar.
    3) "Mr. Jones" by The Counting Crows - turned me on to Bob Dylan, and by extension music. "August and Everything After" was the first CD I really listened the shit out of (damn sentences ending in prepositions - the first CD out of which's shit I really listened ... fuck!).
    4) The entire album "OK Computer" by Radiohead.
    5) "She's a Jar" by Wilco - opened the door to indie rock for me.

    EDIT: I'm going to add:
    6) "Moonshiner" by Uncle Tupelo - this turned me on to the idea of traditional songs, which opened me to folk, roots music, bluegrass, etc.

It's debatable whether any of these actually "changed my life," I guess except to the extent to which music is part of my life now (I didn't listen to music in high school). Of course, Natalie Portman has never asked me to listen to anything.

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE? (stolen from [info]junior37)

    So, here's how it works:

    1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
    2. Put it on shuffle
    3. Press play
    4. For every question, type the song that's playing
    5. When you go to a new question, press the next button

    Opening Credits:
Count Basie / Joe Williams: The Comeback

    Waking Up:
Jeff Buckley: Lilac Wine (this would have to be a druggy / psychedelic wake-up scene)

    First Day At School:
    N.W.A.: Express Yourself (awesome)

    Falling In Love:
The Kruger Brothers: Will You Be Loving Another Man? (man, that's pretty pessimistic for a "falling in love" song. I would also like to note that the four songs so far have been swing, indie rock, rap, and bluegrass. All I need is some polka or something)

    Fight Song:
American Music Club: Only Love Can Set You Free (ummm ... maybe not)

    Breaking Up:
    Uncle Tupelo: So-Called Friend

    Prom:
The Ramones: Beat On the Brat (ummm ... I don't know what kind of prom this is ...)

    Life:
    Louis Jordan: Pan Pan

    Mental Breakdown:
Sleater-Kinney: It's Enough (this is actually a really good fit)

    Driving:
Iron & Wine: Each Coming Night (driving ... really ... slow ...)

    Flashback:
    Dizzee Rascal: Stop Dat

    Getting Back Together:
Flatt & Scruggs: Old McDonald Had a Farm (yes, this is really in my playlist. Yes, it's awesome. Yes, it is a ridiculous "getting back together" song)

    Wedding:
Tilly & the Wall: Bad Education (ominous)

    Birth of Child:
Count Basie: Jumpin' At the Woodside

    Final Battle:
Louis Jordan (with Bing Crosby): My Baby Said Yes (what manner of battle is this?)

    Death Scene:
Ruthie Foster: Give You My Love

    Funeral Song:
Slaid Cleaves: Lydia (She watched them pull him from the hole / The overalls he wore were blackened by the smoke / Lydie twice had had this dream and twice it had come true. / And when she saw his father's boots she knew. // Oh Lydie, let him go; the boy is gone / Her mother struggled as she tore him from her arms / Oh Lydia, your tears are heaven's rain, / But she never was the same.)

    End Credits:
    The Streets: Don't Mug Yourself

    Life
Last night my fantasy football team had a one-point lead. I had Rod Smith going, my opponent had no one. Smith finished with one catch for six yards and a lost fumble. Minus-2 fantasy points. I lost by one.

Fortunately I figured out last week that life is relentlessly disappointing.

    Trinidad
Does anyone have an opinion (and by opinion, I mean factual knowledge) about whether Trinidad is technically part of North America or South America? Wikipedia says NA, but I am looking for confirmation. Who decides these things, anyway? I mean, it's an island; isn't the massive land mass it's associated with kind of arbitrary?

I've had this argument twice today already ... and it's only going to get worse
Jhonny Rico (11:49:16 AM): SNAKES ON A PLANE
DaveArchie (11:50:07 AM): I'm not seeing it
Jhonny Rico (11:50:27 AM): i think you meant to say "i'm getting drunk on the way to the theater before i see it"
DaveArchie (11:50:29 AM): I think I need to write a ten-page paper on why it would be the downfall of America if as many people see this as I think are going to
DaveArchie (11:50:39 AM): it's the opposite of art
    Jhonny Rico (11:50:44 AM): yeah
Jhonny Rico (11:50:50 AM): but it makes no pretense about being art
DaveArchie (11:50:54 AM): it's a completely meta view of pandering to the lowest common denominator
DaveArchie (11:51:15 AM): yeah, but the lack of pretense is egregious
DaveArchie (11:51:38 AM): because it's not trying to be "unintentionally funny" or "campy" or even "so good it's bad"
DaveArchie (11:52:05 AM): it's trying to be "commercially successful because a bunch of people will see it because of how self-awaredly terrible it is"
DaveArchie (11:52:26 AM): there's not even an artistic pretense to the lack of artistic integrity
Jhonny Rico (11:52:44 AM): a great number of things are commercially successful for worse reasons
    DaveArchie (11:52:57 AM): I disagree
DaveArchie (11:53:06 AM): or maybe that is true
DaveArchie (11:53:37 AM): but it's like shining a light at the Statue of Liberty and saying to America, "Give me your stupid, your foolish, your shallow ... but most of all, give me your money"
Jhonny Rico (11:53:47 AM): i think it would be worse if they had retitled it "pacific flight 93" and tried to make it more dramatic or what have you. i think there's a certain purity to its simplicity of purpose. it's just samuel l. jackson and snakes on a plane
Jhonny Rico (11:53:53 AM): yeah but hollywood's been doing that for YEARS
    DaveArchie (11:53:57 AM): yes
Jhonny Rico (11:53:59 AM): at least this time they aren't bullshitting about it
    DaveArchie (11:54:02 AM): yes
DaveArchie (11:54:06 AM): but that makes it worse
DaveArchie (11:54:29 AM): because now the people are saying, "Yes, I hate art. Yes, I like the most shallow and base and worthless elements of human existence."
DaveArchie (11:57:05 AM): before they were just being kind of cowed into implicitly stating that
DaveArchie (11:57:10 AM): now they are actively saying it
Jhonny Rico (12:00:00 PM): i'm not sure if that's worse though. obviously it's better if the people prefer art but i think it's better for the masses if they're honest about what they want, even if what they want sucks. i mean we already knew the masses don't have taste. now they know it too
Jhonny Rico (12:01:01 PM): i'd much prefer if they reached higher in their ambitions
Jhonny Rico (12:01:04 PM): but they're not going to
Jhonny Rico (12:01:05 PM): and we know it
DaveArchie (12:01:36 PM): it would just restore my faith in humanity so much if people said, "This looks like a piece of shit. I'm not going to see this fucking piece of shit."
DaveArchie (12:02:00 PM): I mean, this isn't like Armageddon where people actually thought it was going to be good (and some even liked it)
DaveArchie (12:02:07 PM): nobody thinks this is going to be good
DaveArchie (12:02:11 PM): even the people making it
Jhonny Rico (12:03:49 PM): i think the people-- at least the ones who've thought it through at all, and the rest were never going to anyway-- are more excited about being a part of this moment of cultural absurdity
DaveArchie (12:04:15 PM): it reminds me of the Wilco song "Hell Is Chrome"
DaveArchie (12:04:23 PM): Satan just makes it look so fucking sweet
    Jhonny Rico (12:06:54 PM): yeah
